Series #99 – Run 1 – 2 February 2022 – Run No. 589

GENERAL BUSINESS
This series we are pleased to welcome a new team into the Corporate Cup, ASIC – the Corporate Cops.  Sadly though we bid farewell to MYOB Stings, who have been part of the Cup for many years, and also Suncorp are stepping down hopefully for just one series.

SYDNEY CORPORATE CUP POINTSCORE TROPHY
Cooler weather with some showers made for quite good running conditions, although with turnout continuing to be quite low in these difficult times the point scoring was generally not high.  Macquarie Nomads led the way with an excellent 144 points, well clear of Reserve Bank Magic Milers on 63 and Domain Dashers on 56.  The total points scored in run 1 was 682.

Team Run 1 Run 2 Run 3 Run 4 Run 5 Run 6 Total
Macquarie Nomads 144 144
Reserve Bank Magic Milers 63 63
Domain Dashers 56 56

RABOBANK KNOCKOUT TROPHY
There was a new first in the knockout – a nil-nil draw!  There are only four knockout matches in round 1, to reduce the number of teams from 36 to 32, and inevitably the draw was in one of those matches.  Commonwealth Bank Harriers 2 and APRA Standard Setters were the teams involved, and they will go into a three way tie in round 2 against newcomers ASIC – the Corporate Cops, who beat Transport Trainers 12-8.  The other knockout matches saw King & Wood Mallesons beat Awesome Midday Pacers 7-2 and Commonwealth Bank Harriers 1 beat JPM Jets 31-0.

FASTEST TEAM COMPETITION
Reserve Bank Magic Milers had the best score in round 1 with 5, closely followed by Legal Eagles and Telstra Tornados with 4 apiece.

SYDNEY CORPORATE CUP POINTSCORE TROPHY
Conditions were a little milder than last week, but very humid and, with the series unfortunately spilling over into many people’s Christmas break, attendance and point scoring were both well down.  Domain Dashers top scored with 60 points, just ahead of Macquarie Nomads on 57, while Reserve Bank Magic Milers were next best with 37.  Macquarie Nomads have taken out the overall title by the huge margin of 249 points.  The total points scored in run 6 was 275.

Series #98 – Run 5 – 15 December 2021 – Run No. 587

SYDNEY CORPORATE CUP POINTSCORE TROPHY
After nearly six months away, we finally got back onto the Corporate Cup course for run 5.  Conditions were warm and sunny, perhaps a bit too warm for producing good times.  Runners also had to contend with some course variations caused by work in the Domain and along the Woolloomooloo sea wall, good navigation practice for the Wednesday night orienteering series which is now in full swing.

Turnout was understandably low, with many not able to get into the city, and those that did come didn’t score too highly.  Only seven teams scored more than 10 points in total, led by Legal Eagles with 43.  They were closely followed by Macquarie Generals with 41 and ANZ Incredibles with 39.  Macquarie Nomads remain over 200 points clear of the field and, while they could mathematically still be caught, I’m prepared to call this one now!  The total points scored in run 5 was 302.

Team Run 1 Run 2 Run 3 Run 4 Run 5 Run 6 Total
Macquarie Nomads 135 185 154 97 8   579
BT Dominators 134 83 105 41 10   373
Sydney Tax Pack 88 95 109 47 19   358

RABOBANK KNOCKOUT TROPHY
The low scoring produced two very close matches in the semi-finals of the knockout, with Macquarie Nomads pipping ASX All Ordinaries 8-5 and Domain Dashers beating Westpac Trotters 19-9.  Macquarie Nomads and Domain Dashers will meet in the final, while ASX All Ordinaries and Westpac Trotters will play off for 3rd place.

FASTEST TEAM COMPETITION
It’s going to the wire in this competition, with Legal Eagles achieving the top score of 5 (out of only 13 in total) and closing to within one point of Reserve Bank Magic Milers at the top of the table.  Telstra Tornados remain in third.

Special thanks to Colin Armstrong of Reserve Bank Midday Milers and Vic Anderson of State Audit for stepping up to ensure the timing box made it to the start line for run 4, and also to Vic for chalking up the course amendments, after Chris Stephenson couldn’t come into the city (a “red zone”) as he was flying to Melbourne that afternoon.

SYDNEY CORPORATE CUP POINTSCORE TROPHY
Conditions were quite mild and good for running, but the Sydney COVID outbreak meant that many runners stayed away and the point scoring was correspondingly much lower.  Fifteen teams scored less than 10 points in total, with Macquarie Nomads the only team to beat 50.  They top scored with 97, followed by Sydney Tax Pack with 47 and Legal Eagles with 43.  Macquarie Nomads are now over 200 points clear of the field.  The total points scored in run 4 was 690.

SYDNEY CORPORATE CUP POINTSCORE TROPHY
It was another superb day for a run, sunny but not too warm.  The point scoring was again not high, with four teams reaching the 100 points mark: Macquarie Nomads again led the way, streeting the field with a massive 185 points, followed by Reserve Bank Magic Milers with 104, Macquarie Generals with 102 and Westpac Harriers with 101 points.  Macquarie Nomads have opened up a huge 103 point gap at the top of the field.  The total points scored in run 2 was 2,345.

GENERAL BUSINESS
There was a bit of movement in our top ten lists at the end of last series.  Congratulations to Jan Swinhoe of Westpac Harriers who moved to the top of the women’s all time most runs list with 272, and Lynn Herisson of Transport Trainers, who has the longest current streak among the women of 15 runs.

This series we are very pleased to welcome back Suncorp and King & Wood Mallesons after a one series COVID-induced absence, while NRMA have combined their two teams into one, so sadly we say farewell to the CGU Champions.

The Corporate Cup resumed on our alternate course, using course C (the middle path above Farm Cove) and the new loop around the Woolloomooloo waterfront, which we expect to continue to use throughout series 98.

SYDNEY CORPORATE CUP POINTSCORE TROPHY
It was a great day for the opening run, sunny but with a cool breeze.  Point scoring however was only moderate, with just two teams reaching the 100 points mark: Macquarie Nomads led the way with 135 points, with BT Dominators hot on their heels with 134, followed by Reserve Bank Midday Milers with 99 points.  The total points scored in run 1 was 1,978.

Series #97 – Run 5 – 31 March 2021 – Run No. 581

GENERAL BUSINESS
It seems that I did our 450 run man John Cantlon of State Audit a grave disservice in the last newsletter, crediting him with a PB of 26:00.  A more forensic dissection of past records shows that he has a PB of 21:40, recorded in both series 4 and 7 – as John himself says, a looooong time ago!

SYDNEY CORPORATE CUP POINTSCORE TROPHY
There were the same disruptions in the Domain as for run 4, plus an extra course adjustment along Woolloomooloo Bay, caused by the erection of a new fence along the sea wall.  I think that this extra change made the course slightly harder than last week, although similarly short.  Combined with the excellent conditions, this led to some more good point scoring.  Nine teams broke the 100 points mark, again led by Reserve Bank Magic Milers with 170 points, followed by Reserve Bank Midday Milers with 157 and State Treasury with 148.  The Magic Milers now look to be well on their way to the title.  The total points scored in run 5 was 2,477.

Team Run 1 Run 2 Run 3 Run 4 Run 5 Run 6 Total
Reserve Bank Magic Milers 107 162 159 180 170   778
State Treasury 110 127 139 159 148   683
Reserve Bank Midday Milers 118 124 106 69 157   574

RABOBANK KNOCKOUT TROPHY
The semi-finals were both high scoring matches, with Reserve Bank Magic Milers beating Westpac Trotters 170-113 and State Audit beating BT Dominators 105-91.  Reserve Bank Magic Milers will meet State Audit in the final, while Westpac Trotters and BT Dominators will play off for third place.

FASTEST TEAM COMPETITION
Reserve Bank Magic Milers had another big day in the fast teams with 12 fast runs, followed by Legal Eagles with 8 and Telstra Tornados with 6.  The Magic Milers now lead by 17 and they cannot be caught.

SYDNEY CORPORATE CUP POINTSCORE TROPHY
Mayhem in the Domain greeted the runners arriving for run 4, with preparations for Summer in the Domain in full swing and some of our usual paths blocked off.  This led to a modified course which was slightly shorter than usual and, with good conditions as well, there was some good point scoring.  Ten teams broke the 100 points mark, and all by a decent margin, led by Reserve Bank Magic Milers with 180 points, followed by State Treasury with 159 and ABS Moving Averages with 147.  The Magic Milers continue to extend their overall lead.  The total points scored in run 4 was 3,055.

FASTEST TEAM COMPETITION
The shorter course obviously suited Reserve Bank Magic Milers, who had an amazing 13 fast runs and now look to have the competition wrapped up.  Legal Eagles were next best with 7, followed by Telstra Tornados and BT Dominators with 5.  The Magic Milers overall lead is now out to 13.
